Up From the Ground is where I explore life as a wannabe Kansas farmer (vegetables, livestock and home canning included). Competing with this much romanticized return-to-the-land agrarian life is my interest in technology and especially its effect on communication. The two are far from mutually exclusive.
Up From the Ground also is a place for experimentation for my thesis in creative writing at the University of Kansas. Over time, it may become the thesis itself!

. . . or its effect on communication, for that matter ; )
But seriously, I wonder if there *is* an affect associated with technology’s effects on communication – or even relationships.

absolutely … case in point: im and txt technology have birthed the quicky abbreviations of common replies such as brb, lmao, omg, lol. But those ditties weren’t content to stay typed. I hear myself and my peers, showing off our affected language, giving audible weight to these new words.

Hope the existence of the blog is a sign that the thesis or its completion is near. Good luck!

Thanks, Janet! I think of this as the process of the thesis, as opposed to the completion (though yes, the blog is the thesis, too). I encourage you to comment often, especially as I get more into writing about blogging itself – I want to learn from people with experience! -J

p.s. Hey, Joe. Did you know you misspelled your own name in link to your blog?
